ABSTRACT

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals due to gluten and related prolamines. Classically, celiac patients present with gastrointestinal system related findings such as diarrhea due to malabsorption, fatty stool, weight loss and growth retardation. However, overweight / obesity is more common than previously known in children with celiac disease. Overweight / obesity can be detected at the time of diagnosis or after starting a gluten-free diet. In this article, the development of obesity after a gluten-free diet is discussed in the case followed up with the diagnosis of celiac disease.
