ABSTRACT

Conclusions:

It may be recommended to disseminate public service advertisements, inform individuals with a structured education before the procedure, perform the procedures with sedation when appropriate, and perform the procedures of individuals undergoing both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy in a single staged.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed to 51.8% of the participants, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy to 40%, and both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy to 8.2%. Before the under upper gastrointestinal endoscopy described as an frightening procedure by 20.9% of the participants, this rate was found to be 5% after the procedure. On the other hand, lower upper gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure described as an frightening procedure by 12.3% of the participants, this rate was found to be less than 1% after the procedure. The opinions about the procedure changed positively, showing a significant difference after the procedure (p<0.001). While the state of willing to be informed about the procedure affected the anxiety score before the procedure (p<0.05), being informed about the procedure did not affect the anxiety. Performing the procedure with sedation affects the anxiety score after the procedure (p<0.001).
