ABSTRACT
Hydatid cyst is a parasitic disease caused by infestation of various body tissues by the encysted larvae of Echino-coccosis granulosa, most frequently affecting the liver and lungs. We present a 9-year old male with lung and liver hydatid cyst. After the clinical workup on the second day of admission, the patient underwent surgery because suppuration has developed in the lung cyst. The ruptured lung cyst was excised by cystectomy and capitonnage via left thoracotomy. After surgery, the liver cyst was evacuated with an interventional method. The diagnosis of hydatid cyst was confirmed by histopathological examination. This case report indicates that open surgery, ac-companied by ultrasonographically guided aspiration, can be effective treatment of left lung and liver hydatid cyst. (Gazi Med J 2011; 22: 85-7)
